Making your way in the world today takes everything you got…

Taking a break from all your worries sure would help a lot
Wouldn’t you like to get away?
Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name
And they’re always glad you came…

Ok, ok- for those of you who aren’t fans of the old show “Cheers”, you may not recognize that intro but it is actually the beloved theme song. A friend and I were joking once that if our house was a sitcom, we would have to steal that song. Its just too perfect.

You want to be where you can see that people are all the same
You want to go where everybody knows your name

Where is she going with this? you are wondering. No, this is not going to be a pitch for a sitcom based on our house, though I often think of that and we have actually discussed who we would want to play us (my husband opted for Russell Crowe or Chuck Norris to play him =) ). And this isn’t going to be a blog about the value of community and how every great TV comedy is really just about community (Cheers, Friends, Seinfeld, etc.)- though I think that is true.

The purpose of the Cheers intro is to celebrate this big announcement…are you ready?
We have friends.

No, we do not pay them, and yes they are real and speak English. No, seriously, it occurred to me that I should blog about this truth because I lamented the opposite (lack of friends) in my previous “Left Behind” blog which you can read in the archives if you so choose.

There are two couples who we have gotten to know more and are so thankful for. One is our friends, Hiro and Keri, who we met at Core Community. We have shared some lazy Sunday afternoons this fall, just hanging out and playing games. They have two little girls and one on the way. The funny thing is our first-borns, Drew and Claire, do not care for each other and have actually both declared that they are not friends! But Drew is quite nuts about their younger daughter, Sabrina, and even calls her his best friend. Here’s a shot of them sitting in our kitchen. (The girls really do smile quite a bit- though you wouldn’t believe it from this picture!)
Drew, Claire, and Sabrina

The other couple we have gotten to know over the last few months is Reid and Shelley. We met them through a mutual friend and have been so blessed by their shared values and desire to just be part of our lives. Garrett and Reid both played rugby this fall and bonded over their shared injuries and motrin addiction. They are big time game players, so our evenings are full of everything from Speed Uno to Settlers to Duels. (Yes- I know I vowed not to mention that game on my blog but I would be remiss to leave it out. The Duels craze at our house is purely Reid’s fault and I am holding him personally responsible for the fact that Star Wars jokes and clothing are now becoming common in our home).

The neat thing about both of these couples is that they have different things going on in their lives but they are living for the kingdom. It is refreshing, challenging, and energizing to be in friendship with people like that.

So there you have it. Real-life friends. Who knew?
